Affadvit Required of Homestead Claimants, 1870.

Affadvit required of homestead claimants, dated March 18, 1870, for James O. Austin, Bennett Harrison, and Dick Burgers under the Homestead Act of 1864, concerning land in Ionia (Mich.). Included on this claimant's copy is witness testimony from John Burgers, Herman C. Merriam, Thomas Badgett, Austin, Harrison, and Dick Burgers. The testimony noted that Austin was married with three children, had settled the land on Aug. 3, 1865, described his house, three acres of chopped trees, and 12 acres of cultivated farmland. The original seal is still attached.
